ENGLISH

Estimated parliamentarians,

In reference to the imminent approval of the bill designed to elevate bullfighting festivals into the category of Cultural Heritage, I am writing to convey the Spanish population's overwhelming rejection of this initiative.
You must know that many Spaniards are truly outraged at the way in which the cruel tradition of bullfighting continues to be promoted by the authorities and institutions of our country, despite the fact that this tradition is disputed and loathed by the majority of Spanish citizens. We are ashamed to belong to a nation whose political élite, rather than encouraging moral progress, fosters depravity by promoting its most barbaric tradition.
As you know, bullfighting festivals are authorized and scandalously condoned on the pretext that they form part of the 'artistic and cultural' heritage of this country. (videos attached)
It is however, totally irrational that in order to preserve such festivals, bulls must be excluded from the laws which should protect them, so that they can be exploited as mere commodities upon which any type of torture and atrocity can be inflicted with the sole aim of amusing spectators.
Many Spaniards have begun to reflect on this and are speaking out to denounce the brutality inherent in these traditions, but their voices are being ignored or suppressed by the authorities, the media, and by politicians.
It is not only the attitude of our politicians which angers us, but also the indifference of the EU itself, which through its silence and impassivity is complicit in the cruel, unjust, and merciless slaughter of bulls which is carried out with impunity in Spain.
We do not understand how the EU, one of whose objectives is animal welfare legislation, can turn a blind eye and allow calves, heifers, bullocks, and bulls to be irrationally excluded from laws which should protect all animals to spare them any unnecessary suffering.
I beg you to reflect on the ethics of this matter; whether it is logical and reasonable that the EU should continue to permit entertainment which involves the brutal torture of an animal, which should be protected as are other animals, simply because it is a tradition in that country.
I hope that this letter will contribute to the reassessment and modification of European regulations with the aim of establishing more coherent and sensible foundations for animal welfare policy.

The animals affected by these traditions are:
Defenceless calves: used in the bullfighting schools to teach aspiring toreros. With a total lack of ethics, they are used in practical classes to teach children and youths how to thrust steel weapons into their bodies: spears, swords, or daggers. They are also used in public 'becerradas' or bullfights featuring children and young animals, which are subjected to appalling torture.
Bullocks and bulls are used for the training of toreros behind closed doors, and in the so-called 'novilladas', 'corridas' and public festivals.
In the novilladas and corridas, the animals enter the ring terrified and confused; their behaviour is defensive like that of any other herbivore, their intention is to flee (it is not by chance that bullrings are round) but they are forced to defend themselves from the persecution and torture inflicted on them. First the picador on horseback pierces him with the puya, a pointed lance which opens a wide wound through which blood gushes out. Then the banderilleros have the job of sticking banderillas (harpoons) into him to weaken the animal further, while the torero waves his cape to trick and confuse him. When the animal is totally exhausted, bled out and drowning in his own blood, the torero prepares to kill him by stabbing his sword through the heart and lungs, which is rarely successful at the first attempt therefore the bull is frequently finished off with several stabs of the dagger.
During the public festivals, these animals are similarly harassed and tortured by spectators. Some are dragged through the streets being pulled by a rope tied around their horns. Others have iron devices fixed to the ends of their horns holding balls impregnated with flammable liquid which are then set alight and burn for several hours (Toro de Medinaceli) and cause terrible fear and pain. Others are forced into the sea where they drown; some are speared pitilessly by crowds on horseback such as in Tordesillas every September. Many die of a heart attack, and if not, they are used again for the next event.
Lastly, the horses are also victims in these festivals since many of them are disemboweled in the bullring.
To facilitate a better understanding of these festivals, I am attaching videos, with the warning that these may cause distress´

FRANÇAIS

Mrs et Mmes. Les parlementaires:

Chers Monsieurs / Mmes.
